The first paddle is in the mangrove forest behind the bungalows. There are 74 species of mangrove in Thailand. This area has a very wide variety. There are plenty of kingfishers, Brahminy kites, and a wide variety of colorful exotic birds.

Day 2 : Around Ko Muk ( Pearl Island )

trang beachAfter breakfast, paddle to Ko Muk. It's an easy crossing (about 1 1/2 hours). Check into Ko Muk Resort. These bungalows are also set in a garden setting. Later, we'll start paddling around the cliffs to the backside of the island. Towering limestone cliffs add much to the already stunning scenery. Brahminy kites and White-bellied sea eagles soar above the cliffs. Southern Pied and Oriental Pied hornbill sightings are fairly common. There are a couple of beaches, a couple of caves, and a few 'blow holes' along the way.

Arrive at the most popular site in Trang province after the last tour boat has left. There's a short cave that leads to a hidden lagoon. After viewing the astonishing scenery, paddle back to the bungalows. It'll be dark by the time we arrive. Paddling at night is very rewarding. Plus, there's always the bioluminescent plankton that lights up with every sweep of the paddle.

trang cliffToday we have several options. Option 1: After breakfast, head back to the mainland to visit a tidal mangrove river. The mountains here have several caves. One long cave leads to a hidden lagoon. Exit via a different cave. View a broad scope of wildlife in this area. Long-tailed macaques (monkeys), monitor lizards, and a variety of birds are frequently spotted here. Option 2: Spend another day on Ko Ngai snorkeling and paddling.

All in all, this area is perfect for the traveler who wants to see the beauty of southern Thailand , yet not really feel like a tourist. This area is a popular destination for Thai tourists from the nearby town of Trang. Western tourists are just beginning to take advantage of the laid-back island life that this region represents.
